It is a Pyrenean valley unique for its breadth, surrounded by very high mountains and an unusual east-west orientation. This makes the Cerdanya climate very different from what would be expected in a high mountain environment.

The surrounding mountains act as a barrier to the winds, retaining the clouds and making La Cerdanya one of the areas with the most hours of sunshine in Europe, around 3,000 hours per year. This is the reason for the many solar energy facilities in La Cerdanya.

In summer, there are often afternoon storms, usually with sharp but short showers, which produce the intense greenery that characterises the region at a time when the rest of the territory is yellowish and dry.

In autumn and spring, sunny and rainy days alternate and even in winter, sun-dominated days are the norm. This makes skiing on the many Alpine and Nordic slopes so extraordinary. There are not many places where you can enjoy the snow with so much sun and bonanza.

The villages of La Cerdanya are located at an approximate altitude of between 900 and 1200 metres, making it ideal for sports and for training high-level athletes. La Cerdanya has been a place of care and recovery for people with respiratory problems for over a century.

The breadth of the valley, which is very flat in its central part and surrounded by mountains of up to 3,000 metres, offers walks and cycling for people with all kinds of different capacities.

La Cerdanya is an ideal environment for horse enthusiasts. There are many facilities and possibilities for field trips, and golfers also have up to 5 golf courses in the area.
